The Smith & Wesson 5903 reached its optimal form in 1993, with the 3rd type trigger guard. Type is locked breech, hammer fired, traditional double and single action semi automatic pistol. Construction is steel barrel, slide assembly, sights, hammer, trigger and internal parts combined with a lightweight alloy frame. Chambering is 9mm Parabellum, 9mm Luger, 9x19, call it what you will, THE 9mm. It will digest anything from lead head reloads to steel case to premium ammunition, unlike its Glock and Sig competitors. Barrel is 4 inch white steel, marked 9mm Parabellum; and with 5 groove right hand 1:18.75 rifling. Slide is stainless steel, with serrations forward of the safety lever, and with .915 width at the port. The full length steel guide rod combines with the 5903's distinctive barrel to produce well known accuracy of third generation 5900 series pistols. Sights are three dot Novak combat type, dovetailed front and rear, and drift adjustable for windage only. Frame is lightweight alloy, with grip frame serrated fore, front strap. Grips are one piece third gen as the photos show.Trigger is .304 smooth faced steel, with matching .265 Serrated Spur Hammer. Magazine is recent production factory stainless15 round, so 15+1 fully loaded capacity. The 5903 will accept any 5900 magazine. Mec-Gar's 5917 Magazines will up the capacity to 17+1 and still fit flush. Overall length is 7 5/8 inches from muzzle to grip frame strut, with a height of 5 1/2 inches from the top of the rear sight to the end of the magazine floor plate. Weight empty is 28 1/2 ounces, with center of gravity at the breech face. The Smith & Wesson 5903 has a fully ambidextrous decocker and lever safety, as well as a firing pin safety and magazine safety. It will not fire single shot if the magazine is removed. Double action trigger pull is smooth and consistent, 12 pound vicinity; and the single action two stage pull measures 6 1/2 pounds with minimal felt creep. Finish is retouched stainless slide assembly with matte surfaces; satin chrome trigger and matching hammer; and coated matte alloy frame. This 5903 and its mates come to us from security duty in the Land of Israel. Left side slide is importer stamped per US Law. Surface detractions are moderate, principally edge and holster contact wear. We rate this 5903 as Very Good, 80 percent vicinity by our estimate; but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright and clean. We estimate these pistols have been fired fewer than 1500 times for annual qualification, no rounds at all for a 5903 Smith & Wesson.
